Where Do the Candidates Stand on Health Care?

Where Do the Candidates Stand on Health Care?

Throughout the historic 2008 presidential campaign, much attention has been given to the personalities of the candidates. Many know that John McCain survived a horrific ordeal as a POW in Vietnam. Many know that Obama was raised by a single mother in Hawaii, who sometimes had to go on welfare to support her children. And many are now aware of Sarah Palin’s pregnant teenage daughter and the death of Joe Biden’s wife in an automobile crash over 30 years ago.

However, if you ask many supporters of Obama or McCain, very few can tell you where their candidates stand on such issues as health care. Consequently, 45 million Americans live without adequate health care.

Both presidential candidates plan to guarantee health care for all Americans.

“We now face an opportunity-and an obligation-to turn the page on the failed politics of yesterday’s health care debates…My plan begins by covering every American,” said Obama in 2007. “If you already have health insurance, the only thing that will change for you under this plan is the amount of money you will spend on premiums. That will be less. If you are one of the 45 million Americans who don’t have health insurance, you will have it after this plan becomes law. No one will be turned away because of a preexisting condition or illness.”

Obama believes not enough money is spent on prevention and public health, citing the obesity epidemic in this country. According to his website, less than four cents of every medical dollar is spent on prevention. His health plan will provide subsidies for working families that do not qualify for Medicaid and Medicare and allow participants to move to different jobs without changing plans.

McCain wants to put the patients in control of their health care plan by encouraging competition among insurance companies with a greater variety, lower costs and like Obama portability of insurance plans. The Arizona senator will allow citizens to remain with their company’s insurance but will give every family a direct refundable tax credit totaling $5,000 and $2,500 for individuals to offset the high cost of health care. He is also encouraging health savings accounts, which would allow families to control what options they pay for.

Senator Obama’s plan would create a National Health Insurance Exchange, which would act as a watchdog group by implementing rules and standards for insurance companies to guarantee fairness and accessibility.

The GOP hopeful will attempt to encourage greater competition within our drug market through a quicker development of generic prescription drugs. The Democratic nominee plans to allow Americans to buy their meds from other developed countries if the prices are lower outside the country. He will increase the use of generic medicine in Medicare and Medicaid and stop big drug companies from prohibiting generic drugs in the marketplace.

Both candidates favor utilizing technological advancements to assist doctors in their daily operations. In addition, both favor reforming insurance to prevent frivolous lawsuits against doctors. And Obama favors mandatory health care coverage for children, allowing young Americans coverage under their parents’ insurance until age 25.

Whether you are Democrat or Republican, young or old, rich or poor, issues such as health care are life or death situation for many Americans. And unlike other publications Regal Magazine will dedicate the next two months to covering the issues that are most important to all Americans, not the issues that will have no affect on providing a better future for Americans.

there is an idea on how to stop our looting goverments all over africa…the time we spend crusifying them should be spent giving them awearness..it is difficult to let them see our pains while they sit on thier thrones,we all should stand up to make our awearness aweared, let us make it a mandatory thing to stand on there gates on daily basis to peacesfully send them the message of hope and hoping at the same time they will see our message..they are humans they have hearts,it can be reached..

  2. litebug12345 Says:

Never knew how many problems having “bad” cholesterol could cause. I guess I knew it could cause heart disease but developing diabetes was not something I had ever thought about. Last year my levels were way up (192) and my triglycerides were around 450, my doc told me of the risks. I had to do something, thankfully found Sterolyn. This is a formula I can actually feel good about taking.

  3. thetallestpaul Says:

he addresses that in the talk, but really heart disease is the biggest killer worldwide

  5. katherinejean66 Says:

ron paul-he is the best candidate for president -who would make the united states free prosperous and respected instead of feared -he is for the following and this is why I am voting for him
    -end Iraq war
-end of no longer following of constitution
    -secure borders and ports
-renegotiate free trade agreements so they are fair
-end the devaluation of the dollar
    -enforce our immigration laws
-a foreign policy of friendship and commerce
    -end of exporting jobs oversea-
    -eliminate IRS
    -eliminate deficit
-eliminate unbalanced budgets and pork spending
    -streamline intelligence agencies
-reverse laws which take away civil liberties
-give issues like gay marriage and abortion for the states to decide
he has a very very consistent voting record -he has integrity and is seen by his supporters as the most honest candidate because his money comes from little people not corporations to fund his campaign(also he doesnt pander to special interests or lobbyists)but he has gotten a lot of donations

  6. jonas Says:

Ok make is simple two candidates Obama Clinton:
    Taxes:
Both want to lift tax cuts for the wealthy 1% and keep cuts for middle class as is.
    Abortion:
    Their both Pro Choice
    Health Care:
Clinton wants to mandate it for all, Obama doesn't. Now this gets controversy, but a good rebuttal is, when someone doesn't have health care and goes to the hospital everyone who has HC in America pays for them anyway. So mandating it would be a good idea in my opinion.
Education: Both do not support vouchers and want Pre K Education.
Gay: Both believe in civil union
Gun Control: Both believe in moderate gun control.
Immigration: Both want reform and path to citizenship.

I know it seems like they are similar and they are, I'm an independent voting Dem this year and I've been on the fence for the past few months, I've carefully scrutinized both their records and believe Clinton has a better chance of winning and actually getting things done, more experience really. So I'll be voting for her on Tuesday.e

If we refuse to address the pressing health concerns, then people will be coerced into making more children (and hoping that at least 1 will survive). Most of them will die, creating more suffering and certainly not reducing overpopulation. When people are healthy and educated, however, they make more responsible choices about child bearing.

  9. ultraworshipp Says:

No helping foreign nations which are “worth” something is positive. In this particular case , it’s not worth it. Better yet , even if it is , in the end , the more of “us” on this planet , the “less” natural habitat remains. It’s a lose lose situation.

  10. ultraworshipp Says:

life is obviously primordial. But that’s not the point. You said it yourself: “Money is just one of the ways in which life interacts.” Indeed but knowing that , you have to deal with the fact that without it you’re screwed. (unless living like a bum is no problem to you). My sense of humanity ? I have a sense of preservation. I don’t see why the white man should constantly be the savior of the planet. He’s got everything to lose & nothing to gain at the end of the equation.

  11. Lauren Says:

    -the war:
Obama thinks we shouldn't have went to Iraq in the first place, that we lumped Saddam Hussein and the terrorists in one big lump instead of focusing on the real threats. McCain wants to stay in Iraq.

    -abortion
McCain is against it, now with Palin on the ticket they might aim to ban it even for rape and incest victims.
Obama thinks we should take steps to avoid unrequired abortions, but is pro-choice otherwise.

    -gay marriage
Both think that marriage should be defined as an union between a man and a woman, but don't support a strict ban, either.

    -health care
Obama: make healthcare affordable to everyone, in a fashion similar to what is currently offered to government officials
McCain: establish a non-profit organization which will provide support for americans below a certain income level. Also promises he will give $2,500 to individuals and $5,000 for families to offset the cost of insurance.

    -other big arguments
Obama's tax plan offers low taxes for the middle class, McCain however offers tax breaks for the wealthiest percent of the nation.

  12. ROBERT TAKER Says:

only one worth voting for is obama he is the only one who truely supports stem cell and isnt afraid to speak his mind on issues that are worth listening to but thats my opinion hilary is to busy saying what we all want to hear and not actually saying what she thinks and how she is actually going to do for this country not to sure about the other candidates as they seem to be way behind in the polls but obama seems as though he is for the people who work for a living

  13. fckuvrymch Says:

    very good info.

    this is important.

the world is important to me.

  14. FromBoomTown Says:

White man is doing what? WTF is your problem, you idiot? The people who help others help them because they see poverty and want to alleviate it. The whole affirmative action thing in America is due to restitution for slavery and economic bondage in the United States (which I oppose). The only seriously good ting white men did weren’t because they were white; it’s because they had the right to education. AFrica is fucked up because of the IMF and stupid dictators supported by companies.

  15. sahira R Says:

To me, all politicians are liars and thieves. Anyway, if i could vote, i would vote for McCain. i don't want a socialist as a president. Also democrats are ok with abortion and they dont like guns and obama wants to "spread the wealth"

P.S. for those of you who are Slow, THE SOCIALIST IS OBAMA!

  16. Jap Says:

John McCain has everything this country needs….bd

  17. Skydromakk Says:

Well getting the poor richer is not gonna make me a bum…(my contribution ends here)

  18. ManWithGoodHands Says:

No… morally backwards is not relative. Certain MORALS are universal and transcend cultural boundaries. Morals are not to be confused with cultural norms, customs or traditions. Morals include those acts that are universal such as murder (aside from war), rape, corruption, lying, stealing, etc. These acts are not valued by ANY culture regardless of their context.

  19. FromBoomTown Says:

White men took power becaue of gun powder and because they took advantage of others’ trust, like the pilgrims that came to America. Then they enslaved people and exploited the shit out of them. They free-rode on others’ backs for centuries. I think that is more than enought “compensation” fro their contributions to the world.

  20. thetallestpaul Says:

but why is this case not worth something

  21. codaray Says:

I think that it does require more than a sentence. You can look at his site under issues.

He as all Democrats want the troops out and have vowed to end the war.

They all acknowledge global warming and have different plans for improving our footprint on the planet and for creating more efficient energy sources.

He has said that he would help the auto manufacturers but will make them retool the factories to build more fuel efficient cars.

He wants to lower the price of Healthcare. He will make it mandatory for all children to be insured and will give adults the choice. Hillary's plan will not offer the choice- everyone will have to have it. He will also offer tax cuts for lower income groups so that they can afford to but into the system that he proposes.

He also wants to create a web based site in which you can track every dollar that the government spends. He is for and has authored a plan for government transparency.

  22. ishaan55 Says:

Excellent talk. One day, I hope to contribute to health care in Africa with my time and money.

ultraworshit: I won’t say I want you to die; but, when you do, I hope it’s slow.

  23. ManWithGoodHands Says:

A7mad19, if most of the misery on earth was created by the white man, then why is Africa one of the most warring, poor, AIDS-ridden, and morally backwards continents in the world? Now I am not blaming black people, but it certainly points away from white people. I think race has NOTHING to do with good or bad. If you hate Americans, then fine. But don’t blame the races, because if you do, you sound like one of the ignorant fucks running around America in white robes.

  24. StealthShadow Says:

I've been saying that this election is like peeing in the wind. But the ball-sucking analogy works better. They all suck. All of the candidates from both sides suck big hairy pig balls.

The past three elections have been all about voting for the person that you either dislike the least or who you think you might be able to tolerate for four years. Maybe it's time to start bringing in outside contractors from other countries, since we obviously don't have anyone decent over here. Tony Blair is about to be out of a job. Maybe he'd like to be president for a while.

  25. A7mad19 Says:

Most of the misery in this earth is because of the precious white man you parasite! Get over yourself and dont take your opinions seriously.

Just because you thought of some fucked up argument like this one, it doesnt mean that it has any value. Thats just the effect of watching too much American news channels that gave you the illusion that this is actually an intelligent point. Believe me its not.

  26. Skeptic Says:

Apparently the media wants this to stay a two-horse race until the end of time – ever since Perot damn near won in 1992 they haven't provided any third-party candidates with any media coverage, because they're petrified by the idea of an independent candidate running and winning the hearts of America so that the media can't brainwash them for more ratings.

  27. Samantha Says:

I respect your decision to do this because there really is too much info out there to sum it all up on election day.
Obama – wants to end war in Iraq within 16 months because we're losing too many lives and spending over $10 billion a MONTH there. He wants to apply those funds to energy independence, education and lowering taxes for those making under $250,000 a year (the majority of Americans and small businesses).

McCain wants to stay at war as long as possible.

Obama wants to lower our healthcare premiums by creating a government healthcare pool that the less fortunate can contribute to. When uninsured people get healthcare, the taxpayers pick up the bill. If these people had their own healthcare, we wouldn't have to pay for it. We can also keep our current healthcare if we choose to, but pay lower premiums.

McCain wants to tax our healthcare for the first time in history, and his coverage would probably not be picked up by many employers.

Obama will provide more for the middle class and McCain will provide tax breaks to the richest corporations (i.e. ExxonMobil who made $14.8 billion last year alone while we all scraped money for gas) and McCain will give tax breaks to companies that outsource jobs.

Obama wants to create new jobs in America by focusing on wind and solar energy plants. He also wants to manufacture cars here in America instead of buying them from other countries – and he wants to mandate fuel efficiencies so we can be more green. I'd tell you what McCain wants to do about the environment, but he only talked about what Obama WOULDN'T do.

  32. Immortal Syther Says:

Hillary Clinton tried like hell to give the American people Health care coverage the last time around, but was only met by strong opposition from a Republican congress. Actually, everything the Clinton's tried to do was met with strong opposition, the Republicans just wanted to get rid of them, thus the witch hunt that ensued. If she is elected, Mrs. Clinton will try to get national health care once again for alll Americans. This time she has a better chance to succeed.
I don't know what Obama's stand is on this particular issue.

A7mad19 , the language you speak to communicate with me was invented by the white man. The computer you are using was originally invented by the white man. Your television , your car etc..do i even need to bother with the rest ? The parasite that you hate is already planning to conquer other planets. There are good parasites and bad parasites. One which is constantly going forward and the other..in constant need of attention Only good to blame the white man & demand “help”.

  36. homegirl Says:

Im feelling that! I heard about the same thing – John Edwards vows to pull health care from congress and other muckety mucks if UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE is not passed within six months of his election to the Presidency…..you go boy!! I might have to change my vote from Hillary to John….
    Kaytie and without health coverage….

  37. okwunugbo Says:

I dream that one day Nigeria will be good to bring back all Top Nigerian Professional helping other countries. It is indeed called brain drain but our problem is not only caused by white people rather we are suffering from very very bad governance. our leaders are all crooks. Just take a look at what happened with Russia and how they came back much stronger economically. They rejected hand outs but decided to rebuild their country. It is about pride which we haven’t got but only to loot.

  38. John G Says:

    Vote McCain/Palin

    These fine candidates:
    1. Are pro-life
    2. Will withdraw with victory when Iraq is stable
    3. Want energy independence by tapping domestic oil reserves, nuclear, as well as alternatives (wind/water/solar)
    4. Definitely are for smaller government
    5. Believe national health care is a huge mistake
    6. Believe marriage is between a man and woman; however, I think they support civil unions for gays (so their rights as partners are protected)
    7. Do not want to legalize pot

Only items 6 and 7 differ from your views, and these are relatively minor points.

  39. Adambiswanger1 Says:

He’s right. We all have a duty to do something about this.

  40. bubbagirl Says:

Obama didn't even know what a Health Care Plan was until he stole Hillary's ideas; in the first debate he was like….huh? He is constantly taking notes educating himself when she speaks. Nobama is Clueless. Yes – Parents will be fined under his plan if they do not purchase health insurance for their child. Now I would called that Forced.

    DEFINATELY – HILLARY 08 !

  41. reallythisistoomuch Says:

  42. titoC1981 Says:

  43. sweethoney9079 Says:

I feel that Ron Paul would make a very good president.
His foreign policy is very smart. It would help our relations with other countries.
Ron Paul wants to get us out of Iraq and the 130+ nations that we have military stationed in. These countries definitely do not feel too strongly about us at this point. He is NOT an isolationist, and anybody who considers him to be is just uneducated.

Ron Paul is the only one who has a consistent, 30-year voting record to back up every stance he has ever taken. He also has introduced a number of bills which prove his positions.

All the other candidates are all talk, no action. Ron Paul has already done stuff without even being elected president. The other candidates are all waiting to be elected to actually start anything.

I would NOT vote for McCain, Romney, Clinton, Obama or Huckabee. McCain wants to stay in Iraq for a 100 years if need be, Romney doesn't have what it takes to run a country(not to mention his extreme flip-flopping), Clinton wants to control every aspect of our lives(and tax the hell out of us as well). Obama wants universal health care, which in reality never turns out as good as it's supposed to be. He's not really experienced either. Huckabee wants to stay in Iraq, but if he were the Republican nominee, I might vote for him.

I really could write you a book about why I would vote for Ron Paul and why I wouldn't vote for any of the other candidates, but those are the main reasons.

  44. jason57 Says:

The main difference is Clinton's ideas are her own. Obama plagiarized his from Clinton and Edwards.

  45. Colt Says:

He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.

He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war.

He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.

  50. Tea Cake Says:

I think the era of the one-issue voting is passed. The world has gotten way too complicated to base a decision solely on one issue. I know there are people who will argue that if someone cannot stand firmly on life (or choice), how will they stand on anything else. I understand the reasoning, but I don't share it.

  51. Rae Says:

K, let us look at health care.. I would like this too, except I do not want one as the one in Canada.. I do not want to wait, while sick, for 8 hours for the doctor! Do you? National Health Care needs to be looked at.. but it should be implemented with extreme caution. We MUST lean, as much as possible, away from Communism! We should not force national care on anyone! We do not need Hillary because of how she speaks on family! It does not support a local and immediate family, but a National or community family! This is Communism! This is how one gains control of the family and government should have the least of control with the immediate family! Let's look at facts. You want money to pay for health and insurance? Tell the Feds that you want a straight 10% tax! It was already admitted it would work! You keep what.. are u middle-class? You would save 30% of your wage! That can buy the best of both.. But Democrats do not support it.. they want bigger Federal control and more tax! You pay about 38% in taxes as a middle-class. You want more tax and less freedom, vote Democrat, as they admitted, yet would not support… You want to support your local MOB? They have been connected to it for many years! Your choice. Truth hurts! Earl

  52. Mezmarelda Says:

Obama is holding his own, Biden is on his game, the rest of them just simply suck, and it is scary to think that anyone would vote for Hillary, Kucinich, Richardson or anyone other than Obama, Biden, and Edwards who are holding their own quite well. I am done.
