Simple Steps That Employers Should Practice to Increase Their Value of the Health Care System

Simple Steps That Employers Should Practice to Increase Their Value of the Health Care System

In the United States, there are a lot of employers who see health care benefits as the enemy. This is due to the fact that some health care providers fix their attention on the growing cost of the services that are included in the health care package, and this has led them to take steps to lower the rates. Most countries have put this subject on the sideline and they expect that the government will take care of the issue. Some of these health care providers hope that the insurance companies of the patients, or the government will take on this responsibility.

One thing that employers fail to understand is that no matter how hard they try to avoid the subject of health care issues, it will forever haunt them, no matter what kind of health care system is being implemented. The responsibilities of these health care insurance companies include the liability of paying the medical costs, absenteeism, and any other health related issues that they have to pay due to poor health.

According to one study in the United States, most employers use up millions of dollars paying for the indirect expenditure due to unfortunate health condition rather than spending their dollars in health benefits. The expenses that the employers have to pay when it comes to poor health are significantly higher. Conditions like diabetes, heart conditions, and respiratory troubles are among those medical conditions that can cost an employer a fortune, and getting out of this situation will not solve the problems of these health care providers because it will continue.

Most European countries have discovered that investing in the health of their employers by providing them with wellness programs will significantly increase the productivity of their employers, thus decreasing the amount of money that they have to pay for the cost of poor health. One of the approaches that the employers use is bargaining for the best and maximum amount of discounts that they can get from other health plans providers and third party health proprietors. Often they are constantly searching for companies that can help them to provide better deals for their employers. This action on the part of the employers can cause confusion among their employees.

Due to the increase of health care costs, some employers have passed on their responsibility of paying the cost of the health care to their employees. Many of the steps that these employers take as far as health care issues are concerned has cost them more. So, one vital thing that any employer can do to improve their health care system is to consider the value of the health care services and not just the cost alone. After all, it is the results that both employers and employees are after. The main objective of this approach is to increase the value of the services and not to reduce the costs of the overall health care benefits.

For effective HIT implementation, require electronic medical record vendors that receive federal funding to have physician on-staff to evaluate workflow impact and streamline implementation.

I like the idea of a healthcore that focuses on the National Partner Priority initiatives. Major bonus points if this tackles disparities in healthcare.

  4. kd1s says:

Here’s my idea, how about universal health insurance. Of course I know that will never happen since the insurance industry is too entrenched.

So nationalize the medical system. I think it would be beneficial to the U.S. to do so.

They have a 100 percent covered plan for them and their families for life (assuming they serve at least 6 years), along with an excellent pension plan for life.

They will care about the crisis if it is something the voters want! After all, if they are not acting in the interest of the voters, they will lose their seat and their health care plan.

Unfortunately, there is so much disagreement between the "left" and the "right" that it is difficult for congress to do anything. In addition, many people (even those who truly need health care reforms) vote based on moral values, leaving health care to be ignored.

Do catastrophic health care first, that would lower health care insurance premiums. Let’s say the government was to cover expenses over $100,000 then you would support from the doctors, hospitals and insurance companies. How much would it cost a family with a $5,000 deductible to cover them to $100,000? I think companies and individuals could afford that payment.

  12. Yeah, change this world for the better, don’t make the people force you as in every other change for the good that’s happened in all of human history. This time those in charge should lead us along a rational and righteous path, without the religious overtones..

Let’s show the good side of the human mind for once..

    peace, love…

This appears to be decision making by focus group, as per the broader input from the Internet to increase the sample size. The most likely outcome is that Americans want the world’s best healthcare system, provided by government fiat, at someone else’s expense. Not entirely unreasonable, when so-called developing countries get to enjoy some of such an outcome at the expense of Americans. The analogy is: America must sacrifice its infrastructure so that it can be built in Iraq and Afghanistan.

  17. It doesn't fail, almost every first world country has it setup as a system.

Unless of course you view treatment of the poorer people a failure.

The benefit to not treating a lot of people, is faster care for the wealthy.

If you don't want to have universal health care, the government can step in and price fix medical procedures like they do in japan. It works okay for them. They can afford adequate medical treatment because the government forces it to be affordable, and the same prices in rural as in urban areas.

The real problem with our system, coming from someone who has an entire family in medicine (Doctors, surgeons, nurses)…is the insurance companies. They buffer every side. The doctors, the hospital, the patients, everyone has to get insurance, and they are the ones forcing prices higher and higher.

  18. Tyler S says:

You need to talk with a local agent that works with all of the major companies in your area. Insurance companies and the plans they offer will vary from state to state and the premium with any one plan can vary by zip code.

At 22 if you are in good health you should be able to find a catastrophic plan for less than $100 in most states and a comprehensive plan shouldn't be much more than $100.

The agent will be able to explain what you need to know – there is not enough space here to tell you everything. You'll need to know about the deductible, the co-insurance, the co-pays and what is covered with the co-pay, what procedures are and are not subject to the deductible, what is excluded from the plans, which doctors accept the plans, the different types of plans and how they operate, the prescription coverage if any, and much more. There is no extra charge using an agent.

  19. Obama’s superlative management skills, to wit his superbly-run campaign & against-all-odds victory, combined with his tireless energy & first-class mind, make a break-through on health likely, if not a certainty. You Americans are lucky to ahve such a gifted man at the helm.

  21. Elgiasgirls says:

If we could fix our healthcare system, wouldn’t we put more people to work? A smaller ratio of care worker to patient would support employment and provide better care to people.
Also, please consider preventive care as well. It seems as though prevention is often left out of the conversation and yet it is less costly to prevent illness than to heal/cure or manage it.

  22. antdog1991 says:

    2 questions
#1 How many doctors will be sit at that table discussing health care? Primary care doctor have to be at the forefront of any realistic health care policies.
#2 Is the internet the best resource for gathering vital information needed? The main recipients of health care is the elderly. They have many story but the internet may be too new and intimidating. I had heard horror story of Medicare plan D’s “Doughnut hole” but the people I hear from are elderly who rarely use the internet.

  23. If you want to see a Kafkaesque, Byzantine bureaucracy at work, just let’s stick with the system we’ve got in the US today. Take it from an ex-UK citizen (now US, lived here 16 years) who grew up on the choose-your-doctor, free at the point of service, free drugs (before Thatcher) NHS.

  24. I agree with a lot of what Nemisis said, but I think I can simplify it even further.

Insurance is gambling. How do we keep Casino's from getting more and more corrupt, like the insurance industry is?

Caps on profits. If an insurance company had to pay out 90 cents of every dollar that it takes in, it would have to lower premiums. Pass transparent billing, enforce contract law and anti-trust laws. That is very important too, but if insurance companies were obligated to return a percentage of what they take in, not a percentage of net, but a percentage of each and every dollar they touch, health care costs would come down to a realistic level.

One law, enforce the others. Done!

  25. That doesn’t mean they know How to fix it though…

Cutpremium paid to private insurers for the medicare plus programs. As I understand the amount was $795 monthly in 2008.Far more than competive bidding. The donut hole,non-bid prescriptions is a hoax. There should be means testing and duplication of Medicare/VA etc. benefits stopped. Perhaps Ross Perot who reportedly did such an outstanding job in low cost claims processing might give some great advice. I am excited about your appointment to this post. Amazing. Nursing is like the best profession out there. There are so many sub-specialties in all professional areas.

There are about 100 different nursing specialties. See below for the list. I know that doesn't completely answer you question, but the list can give you some ideas. ~~This is a mute point because Nationalized insurance is not in the works. All the government is proposing is an alternative for people who can't get employer based insurance to be able to buy directly from the same insurance that senators and congressmen get. Otherwise, business as usual for private insurance companies.~~

  30. I get your point about salaries contributing to the cost of health care but do you also consider the contributions of the insurance & pharmaceutical companies? Michelle Obama has no influence in either industry so forfeiting her salary benefits no one, especially not well educated, church going, private citizen Michelle. Why in the world should 5 migraine pills cost over $100? Why does a small business owner pay so much for insurance he can’t afford the deductible it costs to be sick?

  31. d2tminc says:

Let Nike and the NFL,NBA and Coke advertise on medical cards bottles etc just like some MasterCard’s and bank cards to bring the cost of healthcare down even local small businesses.

  32. TheocracyNow says:

Michelle Obama was making over $300,000 a year working at the Hospital in 2006, how will healthcare costs go down when people like Michelle Obama are raking in the cash off the backs of sick people ???

  33. PatsBlog says:

The government has done such a stellar job with social security, Medicare, and the mortgage business, let’s have them manage health care too! In fact, why don’t I just work for the government. I wish there was a way that I could get the government to take care of all my needs like food, education, entertainment, retirement, medical, housing, and transportation. I’ll work on the infrastructure and in return the government can provide all of my needs! Who needs money?

  34. littlerocken says:

    Population: 303,824,640 (July 2008 est.) x $20 = $6,076,492,800 a month

    $6,076,492,800 a month x 12 months = $72,917,913,600

If everyone paid $20 a month health care would be affordable. An average household is approx. 4-6 family members this means for a family of six the cost would only be $120

Make all hospitals government agencies and make doctors, nurses and hospital employees state employees.

Insurance companies can do special types of insurance for lipo, etc. Very simple!

  35. Here's something to think about: according to the census bureau, of the 47 million or so that are uninsured almost 10 million are illegal immigrants, 8 million make over 75,000 a year, another 8 million make over 50,000 a year, and 14 million qualify for medic-aid or medicare but do not apply. Hmmm. makes you think that maybe our system isn't so bad after all. So Obama needs to quit with his fear mongering and quit lying to us. There are a lot of unemployed, but 47 million is very misleading. Give us a real number!

Also the idea is that by giving health care to everyone, businesses don't have to pay for it, and then they can give more jobs, increase profit, and help the economy. Which sounds great, if you're stupid. Since Universal health care is insanely expensive, guess who pays for it? raised taxes on business and on the rich, (and apparently companies that aren't green). So it's basically a beat-around the the bush way to distribute wealth. And ask yourself this? Is it a good idea to take from from the rich? Take money from a poor man, and he becomes poorer, take money from a rich man, and he goes to work and fires his workers. So which is worse? MAYBE GOVERNMENT JUST SHOULDN'T TAKE PEOPLES MONEY!
