Dog Health – Dog Health Care Tips

Dog Health - Dog Health Care Tips

Dog health care is such a vast domain that you would need really specific problems to focus on in order to cover the issues you are interested in. Among the main dog health care problems we may say that the most frequent ones are fleas, worms and poisons. If these are not professionally taken care of, other very serious troubles may be expected. Worms and external parasites waste the dogs body of nutrients and energy; plus dog health care providers insist that neglected dogs are full of toxins because of the parasite overgrowth.

Here are some dog health care tips to be used when dealing with worms, fleas or various poisons the dog comes into contact. Puppies need de-worming as early as two or three weeks with the procedure repeated at four or six weeks of age. Dog health care specialists claim that worm immunity in puppies does not appear sooner than six months of age, and the worm larvae pass from mother to puppies. In order to meet the dog health care requirements you need to remove all stools from your garden, keep the lawn cut short and make sure you feed your dog on thoroughly cooked meat.

Fleas are the next dog health care problem under discussion here, and to a certain extent they are responsible for the possible tapeworms they may carry. Fleas and lice are easy to deal with; thanks to the many shampoos, collars or special drops, this dog health care issue has become piece of cake. Do not use human shampoo to wash your dog as it will completely degrease the fur and afterwards the dogs skin would have to secret even more oil to compensate for the deficit. Anti-flea sprays, powders, collars or any other products can be purchased from any dog health care store. However, it is good to ask the vet in the first place too.

Make sure that you keep your dog away from any potentially harmful substances that may lead to poisoning. Dog health care specialists point out that rapid intervention in the poisoning cases is crucial for saving the animals life. If you think your dog may have ingested some toxic chemical, try to give it some fresh milk as a first aid measure and call your vet immediately.

If you live in a tick prone area, be sure to keep a tick collar on your dog at all times. Mark the renewal date on the calendar so you don’t forget to renew it. Your pet’s life may depend on it! Grass ticks cause itchy lumps that can become infected when scratched. If not removed quickly, the paralysis tick can cause death in three to five days.

If your dog seems to suddenly have weak back legs and falls over often, inspect it immediately for a tick and get it to the vet as soon as possible. Luckily, the tick vaccine works well and quickly and can save a dog that looks like it is gasping its last breath.

With attention to these few details, your pet should live a long and happy life, rewarding you with years of fun and companionship.

Racist, sexists, elitist, rigid, blind, self-serving, the list goes on & on! May they all go to the hell they deserve so RICHLY!

To be honest, I can see both sides of this, as Hillary had not made any lipstick comments with respect to herself. However, how is it that some Republicans(AKA the ones not laughing their asses off right now over this)assume that any comment about lipstick refers to Palin now?

First of all, do your homework! Second, do not impulse buy. Stay away from pet stores. The internet is chock full of information–check Yahoo groups for a group specific to owning training, and caring for a Yorkie, Join the list, ask lots of questions. Remember, a dog is a lifetime commitment and should not be taken lightly. Contact breeders in your area (AKC and UKC registries can give you help there, plus they have the breed standard for you to study). If you aren't allowed to see where the dog comes from, run away. A responsible breeder will back their animals–and will be willing to help you should the need arise. If there are any dog trainers or dog training facilities near you talk to them—yes, even toy breeds benefit from training! There are websites that have breed selector quizzes that can help you choose a breed suitable for you. I believe one is on Iams Dog Foods website, another at Animal Planet's site. Consider a shelter dog–they are current on shots, altered, and temperment tested.I hope I've been of some help–and good luck!!

    I suggest this website

    http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx

It is a website based if another website from vets and people in the vet field.. this is the client page. The original site is vin.org Which is a vet site for vets only who talk and discuss about diseases and conditions, how to treat things and furthering their knowledge. And then their is vspn.org which is fro everyone else in the vet field ..so your technicians, assistants and receptionists.

  8. I'm quite a fan of Dr. Hovfe as her articles are very clear, succinct, and I think correct when it comes to feeding cats. I also feel that the canned must be of high quality, not Fancy Feast, Science Diet etc. which use by-product meat.

The teeth issue is also one I feel to be as much genetics as anything else (certainly in my case as a human) and my vets all agree on that. I have a 13 yr old kibble addict and every year the vet looks at her teeth and says, "Well, they don't need cleaning this year – maybe next year." Other cats I have need cleanings every year or every other year. They do eat a raw meat diet and canned food.

If we all ate chips or cereal all day without any milk and only a small amount of water and did not brush our teeth we would have plaque buildup too.

  9. i would recommend talking to zookeepers (or whoever hires them) and find out. Also, call colleges that offer biology programs.

I volunteer at a zoo and a few other volunteers are biology students. One is studying animal behavior.

It's a good idea to do some work in the field if you can. You gain firsthand knowledge which is better than any classroom could teach.

  10. Travis J. says:

It's actually illegal in many states for a breeder to sell or give away puppies under the age of 8 weeks. I strongly insist that you wait until *at least* 8 weeks (preferably longer), and you really need to convince the breeder to keep the others longer too. She's doing a great disservice by separating all the pups. This is a crucial time for their development. These puppies are very likely going to develop some behavioral problems in the future.

Honestly, I would steer far, far away from this breeder. If she's selling puppies this early you can pretty much guarantee she hasn't done any genetic testing on the parents. Please be sure to look up the laws in your area and report this woman if she's breaking them. She has no business breeding.

And yes- until your dog is vaccinated you should avoid bringing him around unfamiliar dogs and public places.

  12. jpeezy1983 says:

If you want to feed the best I truly believe raw is the best. Check out http://www.rawfed.com or the Rawfeeding Yahoo Group.

Innova EVO is a grain free kibble, I feed this while traveling or moving. Anything with grains is completely inappropriate for a carnivores diet.

You are right about Petsmart just wanting to sell things, I used to work there years ago. I finally left because they insisted that I promote the store brand kibble and if sales were slacking on an item we were told to make sure we talk to people about it, no matter what it was. I was feeding my dogs raw at that time as well, I didn't actively promote it only because I didn't want to push people but if I was asked I told them what they wanted to know about it, that really caused some issues, they said I wasn't helping sales so I didn't need to talk about it.

I agree with what Mel S said. Start by redecorating your own bedroom with new flooring, gorgeous bright paint, new window treatments. Then once they see how stunning & up-to-date your room looks, volunteer to redecorate other rooms in the house.

You could also show them home decorating magazines with photos of makeovers using laminate floorings. Explain the benefits & point out how fantastic it looks.

Or maybe you just need to figure out a way to manipulate it to make it seem like it's their idea.
You: "whoa, this carpet is so dirty & smelly from the dog – not to mention out-of-style."
Mom: "well, we can't afford new flooring right now."
You: "oh, i can! that's a great idea. I'll go to The Home Depot & buy new flooring today."

  20. Elizabeth T says:

Get a life. As for the food you are feeding them, just because it is organic does not mean it is any better than other foods that are less expensive. I have never heard of health insurance for chickens, and doubt if the SPCA will help you and pet stores would only laugh. Yes, there are vets that will accept a payment plan. Chickens can be susceptable to a lot of different diseases. Just make sure the chicken house is kept clean, that's the main thing. Make sure they always have lots of clean water. Letting them roam in the yard during the day can prove to be very healthy for them, also. Just make sure they are back in the coop at night so they are safe from predators. If I were you, I would go to the feed store and find a good alternative to the expensive organic feed you are using. There is no proof that it is any better than other feeds. Having pets is like having kids….if you can't afford them, don't have them…

  21. OrngTby says:

i do know some dog owners that have them on veggie diets, much lower carbon footprint. doesn't work for cats.
litter; sawdust pellets or better, shavings, from a local source, composted rather than thrown away, is the only green litter. you cant use the compost for the veg. patch of course, but its fine for round trees and ornamentals.

  22. Semi says:

WTG on rescuing the tiny fellow! At this age, don't worry so much about training, just nurturing and socializing him. The more you can keep him with you the better. Be careful about exposing him to other dogs or puppies unless you are completely sure about the other dog's vaccination status. You don't want him to pick up any nasty bugs at his tender age.

Try to expose him to different people, places and things, but always in a manner that leaves him no room to doubt that he is safe and secure. Don't try to do too much too fast. Just work on building his confidence and showing him the world is a friendly exciting place, not big and scary, and that you are his protector and Giver of All Things Good.

You can also catch him doing behaviors you will want him to do on command later and naming and praising those behaviors when they naturally occur. For instance when he goes to sit, say “Sit (Puppy’s Name), Good Sit!” or “Down (Puppy’s Name), Good Down!”

When he is about 12 weeks old you can start luring him to do these behaviors on command.

  23. You have so many good answers l can only add that l wish l had you as one of my puppy people as few are as well prepared as you and it is wonderful to see this happen.Ask around the area for recommendations for a good vet as they are invaluable as if you do not have a competent one it can lead to all sort of problems. You must get as much info as yu can as to how to train and rear a dog correctly and there are thousands of books loads of info on the internet so yu have loads to choose from.Ask at the Shelter what training books and DVDs they may recommend for you to borrow or purchase as these are essential as if you can understand how a dog thinks and acts you will be able to cope with just about everything that is thrown at you from shy to so called dominant behaviour.Make sure the Shelter you have chosen is a competent one that does 'fix; the pups or dogs before they leave and that they are fully inoculated as believe me there have been cases where this has not happened.Good luck and you can always ask on this site or the Shelter or your vet for help if you need it.hope you get a Lovely puppy/dog that you will enjoy

I have my chihuahuas but I haven't paid attention at some things but I will answer what I know #4 They tend to be very picky so you need to pay attention if they are eating and what kind of food they like, because if they don't eat there sugar level can go really low and may start to have convulsions. #6Chihuahuas like to be in warm areas, they tend to get really cold. They like soft, warm, and kind of closed places because that's how they feel safe. #7 For moms there is a special formulated food for small dogs and also there is a chihuahuas special food that have every thing that they need nutritionally. #8 They need to feel very confortable were they are going to give birth and they may need you to be there with them to help them give birth. You have to be very attentive with her because in some cases they need to be taken to the vet to have a C-section. #9 Yes because you will notice that she will want to have her area for her babies and her, sometimes they are very territorial with their babies, so it is a good idea. I love dogs I hope you're not thinking of taking her to the vet to get the babies out. But there are people who don't mind about it, I would really like to see how she looks and I can accept her if you don't want her. I take really good care of my pets, you can send me an e-mail.

  25. Corinne says:

    Well, I would just make sure you keep an eye out on him all day for the first few days in the cast. It might take a few minutes for your dog to get used to the cast, and he may or may not be in a lot of pain afterwards. Other than that, I can't think of much else. Just make sure you ask you vet about it, they might be able to give you a better answer than I! XD;

  26. PAUL K says:

You are wonderful. Puppy mill rescues can be very difficult. I can give you some ideas on how to work with the stairs and turning in circles.

When you work with her do not use any sound. She will identify the sound (praise etc) with the fear of the stairs. No treats until she makes it to the bottom. Still no sound. Lots of patience on this.

Start at the top with her leash on. Very gently coax her by using her lead one step at a time. When she makes a step keep going if she is.
If not, stop. Give her a MASSAGE. NO petting. Petting encourages the anxiety and massaging relieves it. Then slowly start again. NO TALK. If it helps to sit down beside her, do so. You can also gently lift her body. This may take an hour. If you can only get half way, fine.
But do not praise. Give a treat. Wait and try again.

Turning in circles: Leash her up. Make sure you advise all of your friends to ignore her. No touch, no talk, no eye contact. She has to get past this. Have her beside you and if she will sit that would be good. Don't allow her to get to a place where she can circle and/or hide. Massage her while she is beside you. Again, no talk. Be calm. It may take 30 minutes but she should calm.

Remember, no talk (praise) no petting, massages, patience and calm.

The best way for your dog is also the longer more time consuming one. (sigh)
I would try to see if a vet office will let you bring her in just to walk around several times and maybe getting used to being at the vet's without any prodding or poking. Make it a normal, regular occuring event and as she gets more relaxed and tolerates more the get other people involved in handling her at her pace. Make it as pleasant and fun as possible for the dog. Be patient.

Another (easier) option is finding a vet that is willing to give you a pill to give before appointments. they are harmless as long as used only for vet visits.

Congratulations on your new pup! First of all Huskies are very active. I hope you have a big yard or you can take him to a dog park after he been properly vaccinated. They love to RUN! If you are not an active person, maybe someone in your neighborhood is and can run/walk him. My old Malamute loved to pull the kids in the sled in the winter. They are great dogs if you keep them exercised and brushed out alot. I also recommend puppy classes. Huskies need a firm hand in training.

My choice would have to be a Shih-tzu. They do not shed, you can have fun with their hair, (it's pretty fun experimenting with looks :D ), and their pretty active. The only problem is (atleast around where I live) is you can't have them outside for long. You don't know who can be watching them, planning on stealing them! D:

  35. Wow I would be nervous too, but also would not want
to be away from my pup for 4+weeks.

As suggested, make sure there is no quarantine or other
"laws" in regards to bringing in a dog. If the shots are up
to date and dont expire in the timeframe you will be away,
    that should be fine.

I don't know if there is an "upgrade" to purchase for pets,
but if there is, I would pay it.

As far as a kennel goes, try finding a used on Ebay or Craig's
list if this will be the only time you really need one.

  38. noimok says:

I know that it is hard to think about finding a home for your dogs – but your life might be easier at this time if you did. I had 2 horses that I loved dearly and could not bear to get rid of them, but the truth is that neither one was properly suited for trail riding. It took me 5 months, but I sold both of them (to seperate people) and they actually gave them a better home. One was very high strung and couldn't be a trail horse, he was sold to a young girl who rode him everyday and challenged him by teaching him jumping and dressage. There are so many people who would love your dogs – you could contact a chihuahua or jack russel rescue that would work hard to find homes for them. It would certainly be an act of love to find them homes where they would be loved and have a more stable life. Also, what about you and the stress involved in caring for dogs when your life is upside down? You have to think of yourself first. And good for you dumping the cheating jerk who abused your dog!!! BTW, I now have 2 Tennessee Walking Horses that are specially bred for trail riding – I've had them for 5 years and they are a perfect match for my lifestyle. I also have 2 dogs, had 3, but my beloved Brandi-girl died in July of cancer at age 13.

I have a barking Poodle too. I have really good luck with a citronella collar. Self activated, not remote control. I am not always around to command it so it has to self-activate. If he choses to bark he gets a small squirt of citronella towards his nose. One bark is all I get most of the time. If the collar is broken, he will still be quiet if it's on – most of the time. He knows what wearing it means. No barking, no squirt. I use it in the house when I'm home to keep him from reacting to people across the street and in the car to stop the reaction to motorcycles.

I really like it because I'm not punishing him. He choses to bark he get a negative reniforcement. He cosses not to bark, no problem.

I'm on my 3rd one. The second was a little cheaper, but did not last long. So this one is from Drs Foster & Smith.

  44. Poms are pretty high maintenance when it comes to grooming. But the best thing is to do it regularly. I found a great shampoo for my Pom – it's called Ultra Fluff and you can find it at Petco. It really makes comb out much easier and gives their coat a nice sheen. I do use a blow dryer, but start the process with a wide tooth comb first. Then go to slighter smaller tooth comb, or a brush when she's dry. Don't use the brush on wet coat since it will pull and break it off. Also, when you dry her with a towel after her bath, don't rub back and forth. Just dry in one direction so it won't matt and do the rest of the drying with the blow dryer. As to you wood floors, just keep her nails trimmed and it should be fine. One tip: Poms grow hair between their toes. If the hair gets long enough, it curls under their pads and makes walking on solid floors (wood, linoleum, etc.) very slippery. Be sure to carefully clip that hair between the toes. Have fun – Poms are great little dogs!

  45. jimmyfro5 says:

Conservatives who insist that electing McCain is crucial usually start, and increasingly end, by saying he would make excellent judicial selections. But the more one sees of his impulsive, intensely personal reactions to people and events, the less confidence one has that he would select judges by calm reflection and clear principles, having neither patience nor aptitude for either.
    -George Will Washing Post (Republican)

  46. I think it’s funny how everybody votes republican when all all along u can see their greed. I’m extremely against greedy, close minded, ignorant people, which *cough cough* is Mccain. How is he ignorant? He wants to make ban abortion and make the laws on drugs harsher. Sorry, this just sounds like a HORRIBLE idea. More money from us and over population. I agree w/ everything Obama says!
