Child & Adolescent Mental Health: the Right Career at the Right Time

Child & Adolescent Mental Health: the Right Career at the Right Time

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, an estimated two-thirds of the young people who need mental health services aren’t getting them. The time is now for a career in child and adolescent mental health.

Mental Health Career Profile
Establish and maintain interpersonal relationships, discover private, and very often hidden, information, and then use that information to potentially save someone’s life. If you believe a meaningful career is about more than just a paycheck, mental health could your profession. With a growing population and the identification of new disorders, the field is ripe for growth and discovery.

Child and adolescent mental health services typically focus on a variety of mental, emotional, and substance abuse issues kids experience daily. This may mean working with patients as individuals or in group settings in order to find answers to developmental difficulties. Working environments may include hospitals, clinics, schools, as well as mental health facilities.

A Career at the Competitive Edge
Why mental services? In a word, diversity. One of the primary benefits of a career in this profession is that you’re typically not restricted to a predictable track. There are multi-level tiers that cater to a variety of interests and education levels. Many of the niches overlap, which can allow you to explore your preferences. A few of your options include:
• psychiatry occupational therapy
• clinical psychology
• psychiatric nursing
• social services
• psychotherapy
• language development

Flexibility is another key benefit. A surprising percentage of mental health professionals are self-employed, working within their own established practice or as a freelance consultant. Because mental health is such an in-demand profession, graduates may find that they can create their own schedules, deciding when and how much to work based on their own professional and personal obligations.

Mental Health in the Numbers
When most people think of mental health, the psychologist usually comes immediately to mind. And it can be a good place to start when looking at the growth potential in the field of child and adolescent mental health. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that psychologists alone held 166,000 positions in 2006. And employment of psychologists projected to increase by 15 percent through 2016–that’s faster than the national average. Also, psychologists working in elementary and secondary schools enjoyed one of the higher annual mean salary levels at $66,040.

To Follow This Career Path
While all professionals in the mental health field typically possess a bachelor’s degree in a pertinent subject, students wishing to be competitive for the top jobs should pursue a specialist’s or doctoral degree in psychiatry, psychology, or counseling. For example, if you have your sights set on serving in an educational setting, a specialist (EdS) degree in school psychology traditionally requires 3 years of full-time graduate study plus a 1-year full-time internship.

The requirements for potential psychologists are usually more stringent. Geri Fox, Director of Psychiatry Undergraduate Medical Education with the University of Illinois at Chicago, encourages board certification by completing two years of child and adolescent psychiatry training in addition to earning board certification in general psychiatry.

What mental health services could you benefit from?
Hi, I'm conducting an informal survey for mental health services, my question is, if you were to receive counseling or assistance from a mental health services provider, what would you want? For example if you are depressed, what kind of attention/care would you hope to get? I appreciate your time. Thanks!

    The answer to this is going to depend a whole lot on the state/county/city you're in. Where are you?

  6. Oh, I am in Manitoba and just had a baby!!

    My husband and I gross about 83k a year and we get $54.00 per month. Also, you will get the $100 per month national benefit but you have to include it in your income when you do your taxes.

    Here is a calculator you can use.

    Yes – absolutely.

    I am shaking my head at this one. If I happened to see your nanny leave the van with the 2 children inside, I'd block her in, call the cops, and sit there until they came. That is absolutely wrong.

  13. rodie0512 says:

    file a motion in family court to end the child support based on the child being an adult now and served the other parent the papers. If the child is attending college then child support will continue. Check into that as well.

  14. If a person or couple's taxes aren't high enough to take the full $1000 child tax credit, then the rest of it might be able to be claimed as the "additional child tax credit" to total the full $1000. It's not additional money to the $1000.

    If you don't get the full $1000 because you don't owe enough tax to take it, fill out form 8812 (can be downloaded at irs.gov) to see if you qualify for getting the rest of the $1000 through the additional child tax credit.

  15. mayra says:

    The best way to get child support is thru your local Child Support Enforecement office. You may not be able to force your ex to visit his child, but you can MAKE him support him/her. Child Support Enforcement will automatically garnish his paycheck and send you the money via mail or a check card. They will also assist you with establishing paternity if this has not been done yet. Click the following link to locate your local office:http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/cse/extinf.html

    Depending on the state you live in, the process should take anywhere from 6weeks to 6months. Support is determined on both of your incomes and it may also require that he maintain health insurance for your child.

    Since you have already begun the process, contact your case worker to inquire about the status.

    Good luck!

    It depends on how you filled out the injured spouse form. When you fill out the form, you allocate children and other credits and deductions to one spouse or the other. If the child is assigned to you then you will get the child tax credit. If the child is assigned to your husband then it goes to pay back his offset.

    For the injured spouse form to be beneficial, you should always assign as many good things (like children) to the injured spouse as possible. Children can always be assigned to the injured spouse even if the child was not your biologically, since the child became yours as soon as you married its father.

  29. You can start skating with your child at age 1 or 2. Skating lessons start at age 2 though.

    In Calgary, beginner hockey starts at age 4 which is the first sort of league.
    Then tyke hockey is age 5-6
    Novice is 7-8 and that is when it is more of a true league, rather than a parent/coach-aided game.

  30. John C says:

    1 – 0.5 ^(n-1) >=0.95

    0.5^(n-1) >=0.05

    ln 0.5^(n-1) >=ln 0.05

    n-1 >= ln 0.05 / ln 0.5
    n-1 >= 4.32
    n> = 5.32
    n=6

    explaining
    no mather what sex the first child has
    the probability that secound child has the same sex is 0.5
    and the probability that 2nd and 3th child have the same sex is 0.5^2
    so the probability that all n childs have the same sex is
    0.5^(n-1)
    to have at least one from other sex
    1- 0.5^(n-1)
    and it must be greater or equal to 0.95
    1- 0.5^(n-1) >=0.95

  35. JOANIE E says:

    I dont know how old the child is but first explain to him that unless he can wear his seat belt, he isnt going anywhere, not to the store, not to his friends, NO WHERE. If the child is in school, have him get on the bus.

    Next, for those times when he HAS to be in a car, set up reward/consequence charts. For reward charts, give him something small everytime he wears it without a problem, like a small toy, watching the movie of his choice, whatever. Let him also build up to something bigger. (Once you wear your seat belt 10 times, we'll go to the zoo)
    For the consequence chart, come up with 5 punishments ranging in severity (Lose fav toy, time out, extra chores, losing tv privaleges, etc) Tape dots next to each one. The first time he takes it off, he'll receive the first punishment when he gets home, the second time the second and so on. When he gets to the last punishment, he receives that for the rest of the week everytime he removes the belt. At the end of the week, put the dots back and start over.

  36. Blanche says:

    If you don't have a job then get one and prove that you can support your child. Yes there are welfare programs out there. But you should not try to live of of them. What kind of example is that setting for your child? Prove to the system that you are a good mom. Don't just sit on here whining about it and expecting others to fight your battles. Frankly I think that if you don't have a job or are not going to school(4yrs maximum) you should not recieve any welfare benefits and be at risk to loose your children. After all if the govt is supporting them they should have a say in how they are raised. The only exception to this is parents who are disabled or who have disabled children.

  37. sillydilly66 says:

    The 1st thing that will be determined is custody. If you are granted full custody, the father will be expected to pay child support, and should be granted scheduled visitations. They will base child support on both incomes. If you are granted joint-custody, and the child lives equal time in both homes, I'm not sure what child support would be paid, and to whom. The judge will work that out, along with which parent is responsible for insurance, etc.

  39. Yes. A child under the age of 12 cannot be left alone anywhere even at home. Parent can be arrested and child placed in foster care.

  40. Amanda says:

    the increase in pay we get over there is not our real salary so they never go by that. although since he will be getting regular active duty pay u should hit him up for that. and the army CAN enforce the child support order. your child is entitled to all of the servicemember's BAH. when my husband was deployed i didn't get a dime and his unit told me they can't enforce it with no court order! i too am in army and know that's not true.

  48. Typically what happens in a situation like this is that the child will have dual citizenship until the age of majority. At age of majority the child will have to declare citizenship for one country or the other. I would believe that the application process should not be a problem because until the child declares citizenship, it has not been acquired, so the declaration should be true. Any child born here would automatically have citizenship here (regardless of the family's country of origin.) I'm not sure what happens if the parents become naturalized… best to check INS web site for that information.
